After the success of Wander on Q, more funding is now available as applications open for the 2025-28 round of the Open Streets program.
Open Streets is a NSW Government grant program that aims to transform our streets into more vibrant, walkable public spaces for people to enjoy and safely access through community events and activations.
The new $14.65 million Open Streets round will offer successful councils up to $350,000 in funding over three years to deliver at least one free community street-based event each year. Applications for the competitive grants open on 7 February and close 14 March 2025.
The expansion of the program comes after an evaluation of 135 events from 2024 showed significant economic and cultural benefits for local communities.
The Wander on Q event saw an estimated:
· 15,000 people attend
· Local businesses report an average 20 per cent increase in sales
· 6 local businesses extend their trading hours
· Temporarily pedestrianised 7 of roads into community space
· 92 workers engaged
This next round of funding will support around 40 councils to plan for sustainable event delivery, evolve activations based on community response and build capacity in implementing streamlined processes and reducing costs year on year.
The program aims to build momentum and demand for ongoing street activation and to support a cultural change where activated streets are seen as an everyday experience.
Open Streets Program 2025-28 is open to all councils in NSW. The program is an open competitive grant, meaning applications will be assessed on their comparative merit against nominated criteria.
Councils can apply by completing and submitting the application via the SmartyGrants portal.
